What does CBI mean in SURGICAL

Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) is a procedure used to treat urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, bladder stones and other urological conditions. CBI involves the insertion of a catheter into the bladder which is connected to a sterile solution that continually flushes the bladder with an antibiotic or antiseptic solution over a long period of time.

Continuous bladder irrigation may be indicated for urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, and/or bladder stones. It may also be used as part of treatment following surgery involving the urinary system.

The procedure begins with anesthesia being administered before inserting a catheter into your urethra. A sterile solution will then be passed through this tube continuously to irrigate your entire urinary system. The amount and type of fluid will depend on your specific condition and doctor's preference.

As with any medical procedure there are certain risks associated with continuous bladder irrigation including infection, irritation or inflammation at the catheter site, leakage around the tube due to blockage or improper positioning, bleeding or allergic reaction due to incompatible fluids being used for irrigation. Additionally, if fluid intake exceeds fluid output it can lead to fluid overload which can cause shortness of breath and swelling in various parts of your body.

This will depend largely on your specific condition and response to treatment but typically you should begin noticing improvement within 1-3 days although complete resolution may take several weeks or longer depending on how severe initially your condition was at the start of treatment.
