History

The Chemin de Fer Matapedia was originally built to help open up the rugged terrain of northern New Brunswick and link it with Quebec City. The project was spearheaded by early Canadian entrepreneur John Oulton Creighton who laid down the first track from Grand Falls to Rivière-Matapédia that same year. The track eventually grew over time to reach as far east as Campbellton before its peak operation in 1923 with 22 stations spanning 197 kilometers (122 miles). Over time, demand for railway transportation declined as other forms of transit became increasingly popular, leading to numerous backings in service over decades until only two pieces remained active by 2008 - from Grand Falls all the way up to Campbellton.

Operations

Today there are nine stations still operating along this historic railroad line. The line serves freight customers primarily but also offers scenic excursions for tourists and visitors wishing to explore some of New Brunswick's rural areas in their own unique way. From June till September each year, visitors can take a ride on a vintage passenger train pulled by an authentic steam locomotive while admiring some stunning views — think rolling hills capped by dynamic rivers snaking through lush foliage!

Legacy

The Chemin de Fer Matapedia has been instrumental in connecting many small rural towns together throughout its long operational life. It currently serves not only as an important functional railway system but also remains intrinsically connected with local identity and culture for Matapédians and travellers alike who enjoy taking this romantic journey through time every year!
