What does CNCS mean in UNCLASSIFIED

Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems (CNSC) is a research unit of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Warsaw, founded in July 2006. It seeks to promote an integrated approach to investigating nonlinear and complex phenomena, from the formal aspects of dynamical systems theory to the more application-oriented study of chaotic dynamics, spatio-temporal patterns, networks, evolutionary computation and bio-inspired computing. CNSC also has strong affinity with interdisciplinary research, including biology, social sciences or economics. Our mission is to explore new theoretical results as well as innovative methodologies — which bridge ideology and practice — in order to gain a better understanding of complex phenomena observed in nature.

Research Topics

At CNSC we specialize in various topics related to nonlinear and complex systems. The main focus lies on chaos theory, fractal geometry, self-organization, stochastic processes and spatio-temporal patterns formation. We also actively collaborate with many other research teams across Europe on problems relevant for applications in neurosciences (neuronal models), robotics (hybrid automata) as well as economics (econophysics). Other projects address general themes such as collective intelligence or game theory — both from the theoretical point of view as well as experimental studies involving human participants.

Conclusions

By studying physical phenomena at different spatial and temporal scales — from subatomic particles through molecules up to macroscopic objects - CNSC strives to deepen our understanding not only of physics but also of emergent properties appearing in many different fields such as computer science or engineering. Our ultimate goal is to make fundamental advancements towards constructing more powerful artificial systems using principles from nonlinear dynamics that are confirmed by experiments in natural systems.
