AASR stands for “Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite” and is an organization made up of a set of structured degrees wherein members have the opportunity to ascend by taking on greater responsibilities in each degree. The rite consists of 33 degrees, each symbolically representing some portion of spiritual development culminating in the 33rd degree, which is considered its supreme level. The Ancient Accepted Scottish rite was initially developed as an extension to traditional Freemasonry or 'Blue Lodge' masonry which consisted only of three main degrees – Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason. The first chapter of AASR entered into existence in 1732 after Jacques de R'Etège who had obtained his charter from France presented it to Charles Radclyffe who then presented it to leading masons in Edinburgh who later formed its first chapter.
