History

The Association for Black Culture Centers was founded in 1989 by Dr. Leonard B. Dawson at Howard University in Washington, D.C.. With support from fellow Howard faculty members, Dawson set out to create a space for African Americans on campus to come together and foster meaningful connections through shared experiences related to their culture. He felt that creating a safe space would lead to more significant conversations about topics affecting African Americans today, as well as those faced during our country’s history.. Today the ABCC serves over 200 colleges and universities internationally providing resources such as grants, workshops, conferences, networking opportunities, mentorship programs, formal initiatives of advocacy campaigns against racism plus many other services within its purview.

Current Goals

The Association for Black Culture Centers continues to work towards its mission statement every day through initiatives such as increasing recognition of diverse cultures on college campuses; hosting events for African American students across different schools; connecting alumni with current students; facilitating discussions related to contemporary issues facing African Americans; promoting collaboration across departments at universities/colleges; developing programming around black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs); assisting student development by providing leadership opportunities; acting as an advocate against racism or any form of discrimination against minorities; encouraging career exploration among undergraduate students; offering scholarships geared towards black cultural centers; advocating for Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs); hosting summer internships dedicated towards diversity & inclusion efforts; and much more.
