Location & History
Rajkot lies at the center of Saurashtra peninsula at eastern most part of Kathiawar peninsula on bank of Aji river, which is one of the major rivers in Gujarat. It was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja of Rajkot State in 1620 AD who belonged to Jadeja dynasty that ruled over parts of Saurashtra from 1540. Rajkot quickly became an important trading center due to its strategic location between ports such as Khambhat on east coast and Porbandar on west coast. In 1807, British East India Company took control over Rajkot State during expansion of their colonial empire in India. After Independence, it emerged as one of the leader industrial cities in western region due to establishment of Patola Weaving Centre and few other government owned factories which flourished during 1950s—60s period.
